The LEGO Harry Potter HBO series is coming – and it could change the future of LEGO Harry Potter forever.
There has been some pretty big news for Harry Potter and LEGO fans.
As part of this year’s Back to Hogwarts celebrations, it was officially confirmed that LEGO sets inspired by the upcoming HBO Original Harry Potter series are coming soon.
And while we don’t know exactly what those sets will look like yet, this announcement raises a rather interesting question:
Is this the beginning of the end for LEGO Harry Potter as we know it?
For more than 25 years, LEGO Harry Potter has been closely tied to the films. From the very first sets released back in 2001 to the huge Hogwarts builds, Diagon Alley, the Hogwarts Express and countless character-packed sets we’ve seen over the years, the LEGO theme has largely been about recreating the world we saw on screen.
But now there’s a new Harry Potter universe coming.
The HBO series will retell the original seven books across multiple seasons, giving LEGO an entirely new version of Hogwarts, its characters, locations and magical moments to work with.
And that creates a bit of a dilemma.
Scenario 1: LEGO does both
The most exciting possibility for collectors is that LEGO simply doesn’t choose.
We could continue to get sets based on the original films while also getting a smaller selection of sets inspired by the HBO series.
This would make a lot of sense.
The original films have an enormous nostalgic following, and LEGO has shown throughout 2026 that it isn’t ready to walk away from them. This year alone has brought sets celebrating the 25th anniversary of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, including the new Philosopher’s Stone Collector’s Edition and the massive Ministry of Magic set.
There are also plenty of locations and characters from the films that LEGO hasn’t explored in huge detail yet.
So perhaps we get the occasional HBO series set, while the main LEGO Harry Potter range continues to focus on the movies.
For collectors, this would probably be the best outcome.
Scenario 2: The movies make way for the series
But there’s another possibility.
What if LEGO decides to go all in on the HBO series?
The new show gives LEGO something the films can’t: a completely fresh version of the Harry Potter universe that can be developed alongside the TV series for years.
Each season will bring new characters, costumes, locations and storylines.
And that could provide LEGO with a steady stream of new products.
The problem?
A lot of those locations are going to be very familiar.
We’re almost certainly going to see another Hogwarts. Another Great Hall. Another Hogwarts Express. Another Hagrid’s Hut. Another Diagon Alley.
For fans who have been collecting Harry Potter LEGO for years, that could feel a little repetitive.
And if LEGO were to eventually move entirely towards the HBO version, it could effectively mark the end of the original movie-based LEGO Harry Potter theme.
Not necessarily because Harry Potter LEGO would disappear — quite the opposite.
But because the version we’ve known for the last 25 years could slowly be replaced by the new one.
Could the HBO series actually kill the LEGO Harry Potter subtheme?
This is where things get particularly interesting.
LEGO Harry Potter has always benefited from nostalgia.
For older fans, the appeal isn’t simply building Hogwarts. It’s building the Hogwarts they remember.
The characters, minifigures and locations are connected to the films many fans grew up with.
The HBO series changes that.
Suddenly, Harry, Ron and Hermione will look different. Hogwarts will look different. The teachers will look different. Even familiar scenes will have a new visual identity.
That means LEGO could potentially have two distinct versions of the same Wizarding World competing for shelf space.
And LEGO doesn’t have unlimited space in its annual product lineup.
At some point, something may have to give.
But there’s one big reason to be hopeful
There is a strong argument for LEGO continuing with both versions.
The original films aren’t going anywhere.
In fact, 2026’s 25th-anniversary celebrations have shown just how much nostalgia there still is for the original movie series. LEGO is continuing to release film-inspired sets, including new takes on classic scenes and characters.
And there is a huge difference between someone wanting to buy the Hogwarts they remember from the films and someone wanting to collect the new HBO version.
They could potentially appeal to two different generations of Harry Potter fans.
The HBO series could bring a whole new generation into LEGO Harry Potter, while the original films continue to attract older fans and collectors.
That sounds like a pretty good business opportunity to us.
So, which way will LEGO go?
At the moment, we simply don’t know.
The only thing we know for certain is that LEGO Harry Potter sets based on the HBO series are coming. LEGO hasn’t announced exactly which sets will be released, how many there will be, or whether the existing movie-based range will continue alongside them.
So we’re left with two very different possibilities.
Option one: LEGO continues making sets based on the original films, while introducing a handful of HBO sets alongside them.
Option two: LEGO gradually shifts the entire Harry Potter range towards the HBO series, eventually leaving the original movie sets behind.
Personally, we’d love to see the first option.
There are still so many fantastic moments from the original films that LEGO could explore, and having both versions available would give collectors something genuinely interesting to compare.
But if LEGO decides to go all-in on the HBO series, we could be looking at a completely new era of LEGO Harry Potter.
And perhaps, 25 years after the first Harry Potter LEGO sets arrived, the biggest change to the theme is just about to begin.
For now, there’s only one thing we can say…
Time will tell.
And we’ll be watching closely.
What do you think? Would you rather see LEGO continue making sets based on the original films, or would you like to see them go all-in on the new HBO series?
